Printer cartrigde incompatibilty

recently purchase ink cartridges from the HP wedsite, Normally I buy 901  cartrigdes for my OfficeJet 4500, I was told that the 901 was no longer available, but the HP 60 cartrigde  was compatible for my printer. When I inserted the HP 60 cartrigde the printers states that the new cartrigde is incompatible. Is there a fix for this ?
