HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

My printer will not print in color or black.  I have done all of the steps to clean the printheads, etc.  I have new ink cartridges installed and can tell that ink is coming out of them.  Is it possible that something inside of my printer has dried up?  Printer has not been used in a very long time.  There are times when the print is very light, can hardly read it at all.  Then there are times when nothing will print at all

Hi @KrisVM ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you've done some troubleshooting already, which is great. If your printer hasn't been used in a long time, there could indeed be issues with dried ink or clogged printheads.

Here are a few additional steps you can try to address the problem:

  • Deep Cleaning: If you haven't already, try performing a deep cleaning cycle on your printer. This can sometimes help to clear any stubborn clogs in the printheads. You may need to run the deep cleaning cycle multiple times to see improvement.
  • Manual Cleaning: If deep cleaning doesn't work, you can try manually cleaning the printheads. Most printers have instructions on how to do this in their user manual or on the HP website. Be careful when doing this to avoid damaging the printheads.
  • Check Ink Levels: Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and that they have sufficient ink levels. Sometimes, even if there's ink in the cartridge, it may not be flowing properly due to dried ink or other issues.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Make sure that your printer drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause printing problems. Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
  • Use Genuine Ink Cartridges: If you're using third-party or refilled ink cartridges, try using genuine cartridges from HP.
  • Printer Maintenance: Consider running regular maintenance tasks on your printer, even if you're not using it frequently. This can help prevent issues like dried ink and clogged printheads in the future.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
