Hi @Tterb,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Iur new ink cartridges aren’t working, here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

Ensure Proper Installation:

  • Verify that the cartridges are correctly installed. Remove and reinsert each cartridge, making sure it clicks into place securely.

Check for Protective Tape:

  • New ink cartridges often come with protective tape or seals. Ensure that all protective tape has been removed from the cartridges before installation.

2. Inspect the Cartridges

Check Cartridge Condition:

  • Inspect the cartridges for any physical damage or leaks. Make sure they are not expired or defective.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the nozzles.

3. Check Printer Settings

Verify Cartridge Recognition:

  • Go to your printer’s settings (usually accessible via the control panel or printer software) and check if the printer recognizes the new cartridges.

Align Cartridges:

  • Some printers require cartridge alignment after installation. Look for an option to align cartridges in the printer’s menu or software.

4. Run Printer Diagnostic Tools

Printer Software:

  • Use the printer’s diagnostic tools available in the printer software on your computer. Look for options like “Clean Printheads” or “Align Printheads.”

HP Smart App:

  • If you’re using an HP printer, the HP Smart app has diagnostic tools that can help with issues related to ink cartridges.

5. Perform a Printhead Cleaning

Automatic Cleaning:

  • Use the printer’s built-in cleaning function to clean the printheads. This option is usually found in the printer’s maintenance menu.

Manual Cleaning:

  • If automatic cleaning doesn’t work, follow your printer’s manual for manual printhead cleaning. This typically involves using a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

6. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

Update Drivers:

  • Check for the latest drivers for your printer on the manufacturer’s website and update if necessary.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • Uninstall and then reinstall the printer drivers to ensure there are no software issues affecting the cartridge recognition.

7. Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Update Firmware:
    • Look for any available firmware updates for your printer on the HP support site. Firmware updates can sometimes resolve cartridge issues.

8. Reset Printer

Power Cycle:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

Factory Reset:

  • As a last resort, you may consider performing a factory reset on the printer. Refer to the printer’s manual for instructions on how to do this.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
