Hi @RayDDJ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Printer or Ink System Failure" error on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 is typically related to hardware issues with the ink cartridges, printhead, or the printer itself. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for 1-2 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
Check Ink Cartridges
Remove and Reinsert Cartridges:
- Open the printer access door.
- Remove all ink cartridges and inspect them for damage or leaks.
- Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they click into place.
Replace Problematic Cartridges: If a cartridge appears damaged, replace it with a new one.
Clean the Printhead
- Open the cartridge access door and remove the ink cartridges.
- Locate the printhead and carefully remove it if removable.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean:
- Electrical contacts on the printhead.
- Electrical contacts inside the printer.
- Let the contacts dry for a few minutes.
- Reinstall the printhead and cartridges.
Update the Printer Firmware
Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. Download the latest firmware from the HP Support Website.
Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
- From the printer control panel, navigate to Settings.
- Select Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Settings.
- Confirm the reset.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset
A semi-full reset can clear deeper printer issues:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord and wait 30 seconds.
- Hold the # and 6 buttons on the printer while reconnecting the power cord.
- Release the buttons once the printer powers on.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
