@gayl76, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your printer is either experiencing a clogged black ink nozzle or a misalignment issue. Here’s what you can try:

Troubleshooting Steps:

Check the Ink Cartridges

>Remove and reinsert the black ink cartridge to ensure it's properly seated.

>If available, try using a different black cartridge to see if the issue persists.

Clean the Printhead

>Run the printhead cleaning cycle from the printer’s settings (usually found in "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools").

>If the black ink still doesn’t print, perform a deep cleaning cycle.

Print a Nozzle Check Pattern

This will help determine if the black ink is being used at all. If the black sections are missing, the printhead may be clogged.

Check the Color Profile Settings

>Ensure the printer isn’t set to “Grayscale” or “Color” mode incorrectly.

>In the print settings, select Black & White printing manually and test again.

Perform a Hard Reset

>Turn off the printer, unplug it for 5 minutes, then restart it.

Manually Clean the Printhead (If the issue persists)

>If your printer has a removable printhead, take it out and clean it with warm distilled water (avoid using tap water). Let it dry completely before reinserting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
