So my printer refuses to print if my ink is low, like 30% low. I replace the ink and it won't recognize the cartridges. I have a constant back-and-forth ink swap, sometimes it will recognize 2-3 out of 4 at a time. If one is completely missing then any given cartridge is fine but it's not happy with 4 cartridges leaving my paper unprintable. If I get on the phone with HP support they refuse to help diagnose any issue but want to sell me new printers because my 3-year-old printer is "outdated" even though it's the exact printer I would purchase new. Printers are the most frustrating thing on the planet when they add so much security to make sure you buy their brand of ink to the point that it doesn't recognize their product and god forbid you retry an old cartridge previously used in the printer. Somebody help me please I will throw this thing out the window and go back to using markers to do the job myself.
EDIT: I have seen some people have success going into cartridge settings but these settings straight up do not exist on my model.

Hi @sadprinterss,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can understand your frustration—it's tough when a printer doesn’t seem to cooperate, especially when it insists on playing games with ink cartridges!
Here are a few things you can try:
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 1 minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.
- This reset can sometimes help the printer to recognize new cartridges.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
- Carefully remove the ink cartridges and inspect the contacts (the metal points) on both the cartridge and the printer.
- Use a soft lint-free cloth to clean these contacts with a little bit of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Be gentle to avoid damaging any parts.
Check the Cartridges:
- Ensure that the ink cartridges you're using are genuine HP cartridges and that they’re compatible with your printer.
- If you’ve tried refilled or third-party cartridges, it might be triggering the error.
Update Firmware:
- Sometimes, printer issues are fixed with a firmware update. Try checking the HP support website or using the HP Smart app to see if there’s a firmware update available for your printer.
Cartridge Settings (if available):
- While you mentioned the cartridge settings don’t exist on your model, it's worth checking through the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app on your computer. There might be settings that allow you to bypass certain warnings or reset the cartridge detection.
Remove and Reinsert Cartridges:
- Reinsert the cartridges one by one, ensuring each is seated properly. Even slight misalignments can cause recognition issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
