When I put in my brand new ink cartridges the printer tells me that one or both of the cartridges have an issue. I've tried restarting the printer, completely unplugging it and yes even mad sure that took off the protective covers off the cartridges and still the same message. Can anyone help, please??

@ms_kelly-08, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer doesn't recognize brand-new ink cartridges. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this issue.

Double-Check Cartridge Compatibility

Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges and are compatible with your specific printer model

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes, ink or debris on the cartridge or printer contacts can cause recognition issues.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Let everything dry for 10 minutes, then reinsert the cartridges.

Reset the Printer

You’ve already tried unplugging, which is great. Let’s try a hard reset:

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause cartridge recognition issues.

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page: Official HP® Support
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware.

Try One Cartridge at a Time

Insert only one cartridge at a time (first black, then color) and see if the error appears. This can help identify if one of the cartridges is faulty.

Check for Protective Tape

You mentioned removing the protective covers—just double-check that no orange pull tabs or plastic tape remain on the cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
