Printer selectively prints in Black

HP Recommended
HP Photosmart 5522
macOS 10.12 Sierra

My Printer AIO  seems to be printing 'selectively' in black and white.  I'm fairly certain that it's the printer is 'able' to print in black but I can't seem to get it to print properly

When I print out a print quality diagnostic page, all of the text is visible including the black outline to the 4 color types but the 'black' box is completely white.

When I try to photocopy a black and white page, a page of paper goes through the printer but comes out completely white.

When I print documents in b&w, the paper comes out completely white but if I print in color I get partial prints.

The thing that confuses me is the black ink on the print quality diagnostic page - but not the black box and everything else.  Does anyone know what I need to do?

@kngo, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are not able to print in black. Let us try these steps:

Check the estimated ink levels

From the home screen of the printer control panel, touch the Ink icon . Replace any low or empty ink cartridges.

If black is empty/low, replace it to resolve this issue.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Clean the printhead as shown in this document - Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues

Print a quality report or make a copy in black to check the result.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
