Hi @Jackie1237,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet 8020 series printer is only printing in magenta and black but not in yellow or blue, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.
Check Ink Levels
- Ensure that the yellow and blue (cyan) cartridges have sufficient ink. Even if they are not empty, a clogged cartridge can cause this issue.
Inspect the Cartridges
- Remove the yellow and blue cartridges and inspect them for any damage, dried ink, or clogged nozzles.
- Clean the contacts on the cartridges and the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
Run a Printer Diagnostic
- Access your printer's settings and run a diagnostic or test print to check for issues with the ink system.
- Use the "Print Quality Report" option to see if the yellow and blue colors appear.
Perform a Printhead Cleaning
- From the printer’s menu or HP Smart app, navigate to Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.
- This process clears clogs in the nozzles and may restore color printing.
Replace the Cartridges
- If cleaning does not resolve the issue, try replacing the yellow and blue cartridges with new, genuine HP cartridges. Third-party or refilled cartridges might cause compatibility problems.
Check for Firmware Updates
- Update your printer's firmware to ensure you are using the latest version, which might resolve software or compatibility issues.
Reset the Printer
- Perform a printer reset:
- Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
- Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect and power it back on.

Check Printer Settings
- Ensure that the print settings are not set to monochrome or black-and-white. Confirm the color mode is selected.
Run an Alignment
- Navigate to the printer's settings and run an Alignment to calibrate the printhead and ensure proper operation.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
