Hi @MAB1959,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Many HP printers require that all cartridges, including the color ones, have ink and are functional to print, even if you only want to print in black. This is a common restriction in inkjet printers to maintain print quality and prevent damage to the printhead.

However, some models do offer a workaround. Here’s what you can try.

  • Printer Settings: Check your printer's settings through the control panel or printer software on your computer. Look for an option like "Print in Grayscale" or "Black Ink Only." Enabling this setting may allow you to print using only the black cartridge.
  • Driver Settings: When you go to print a document, the printer driver on your computer usually has settings you can adjust. Look for options that specify printing in black and white or grayscale. Make sure these settings are selected before printing.
  • Disable Color Printing: Some printers allow you to disable color printing altogether. This can force the printer to use the black cartridge only. You may find this option in the printer's control panel menu or in the printer software on your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
