How do I know if a HP ink is pigment based or dye based?

Hi @ConstanceCorey,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

HP uses different types of ink for different cartridge series. Generally:

  • Pigment-based ink is typically used for black ink in most HP printers, especially OfficeJet and PageWide series, because it's more water-resistant and ideal for text printing.
  • Dye-based ink is commonly used for color cartridges because it offers vibrant colors suitable for photo printing.

Here’s a basic guide:

Simple Water Test

You can test the ink type by printing a sample and applying a drop of water:

  • Dye-based ink will bleed or smear.
  • Pigment-based ink will stay intact or only slightly blur.

Check HP’s Website or Cartridge Specs

You can:

  • Visit the HP Ink Cartridge page and search for your cartridge model.
  • Look under “Ink Type” or “Print Technology” in the specs.
  • For example:
    • HP 95 (color) = Dye-based
    • HP 98 (black) = Pigment-based

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
