HP Smart Tank 580

My printer kept flashing "!" indicating an error with the black printhead so I followed all the steps given by the HP virtual assistant. However, the problem persisted which led me to buy a new printhead and replace the old one. After I replaced the black printhead, the error still kep flashing. The HP app also still indicates that the printhead is not communicating. I cannot even do printhead cleaning because of the error.

Additional: live/call support is not available and kept redirecting me to virtual assistance.

Hi @ellamejias,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to replace the black printhead on your HP Smart Tank 580 and still see the same error. You’ve done everything right by following the virtual assistant and even purchasing a new printhead, so let’s try a few additional steps.

If the “!” error light keeps flashing and the HP Smart app says the black printhead is not communicating, here’s what HP recommends:

1. Ensure Proper Installation

  • Power off the printer.
  • Remove and reinsert the black printhead firmly until it clicks.
  • Make sure the protective tape on the new printhead was removed.
  • Check for dirt or ink buildup on the electrical contacts and gently clean them with a lint-free cloth.

2. Reset the Printer

A factory reset can help clear persistent errors:

  • Use the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app.
  • Go to Settings > Restore Defaults.
  • Follow on-screen instructions.

3. Run HP Printhead Diagnostics

If the printer allows:

  • Open the HP Smart App.
  • Navigate to Tools > Print Quality Tools.
  • Try Printhead Cleaning or Alignment.

If these options are greyed out due to the error, proceed to the next step.

4. Advanced Troubleshooting

HP has a dedicated guide for Smart Tank 580 printhead errors: 🔗 Printhead errors on HP Smart Tank 210, 520, 540, 580, 590, or 5100 printers | HP® Support

This includes:

  • Checking firmware updates
  • Verifying ink flow
  • Ensuring no air bubbles in the ink line

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi! Thanks for the response. I have already tried all the steps you shared. I even performed factory reset (I followed the steps in HP support). Unfortunately, the it didn't work out. The attention light still keeps on blinking.
