I have an hp printer, and I'm trying to use it for the first time. It says on the printer screen, cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in ho instant ink. Do I have to enroll it, or is there a way to bypass that?

Hi @Printme9,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it can be when you're eager to start using your printer, but an unexpected requirement like this gets in the way. Let’s look at what’s going on and explore your options.

  • Certain HP printers come with Instant Ink Ready cartridges, which are specifically designed to work only when the printer is enrolled in the HP Instant Ink program.
  • If the printer is not enrolled, these cartridges won't function.

To Resolve This

  1. Enroll in the HP Instant Ink Program (Quick Solution)
    • If you're okay with joining the program, go to the HP Instant Ink website and follow the steps to enroll your printer. Once enrolled, the cartridges will work immediately.
    • You can cancel the subscription later if you don’t want to continue using the program.

2. Purchase Standard Ink Cartridges (Bypass Enrollment)

  • If you don’t want to enroll, you'll need to replace the Instant Ink Ready cartridges with standard HP cartridges.
  • Ensure you purchase the correct cartridge model for your printer (e.g., HP 65, HP 67, etc., depending on your model).

3. Check for Printer Settings in the HP Smart App

  • Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone.
  • Some printers allow you to bypass the enrollment requirement by disabling Instant Ink settings, though this is rare.

4. Reset Printer Settings (Advanced)

  • If none of the above work, try performing a factory reset on the printer:
    1. Locate the Reset option in your printer’s settings menu (refer to the user manual for guidance).
    2. After the reset, reconfigure the printer. Be cautious as this doesn’t always bypass the Instant Ink lock.

  • If you received the Instant Ink Ready cartridges with your printer, using them without enrolling is usually not possible.
  • Purchasing standard cartridges ensures you’re not tied to the subscription program.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
