Hi @Stewartmm ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with refilling the black ink tank on your HP Smart Tank 7600 printer, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Check Ink Levels: Ensure that the black ink tank is not already full. Some printers have sensors that prevent overfilling, and attempting to add more ink when it's already full can lead to issues.

Printer Status and Error Messages: Check the printer's display or any error messages on your computer for information about the issue. The printer might provide specific details about why it's not accepting the ink.

Correct Tank Insertion: Ensure that you are inserting the black ink tank into the correct slot. Sometimes, incorrect placement can cause issues. Refer to your printer's manual for guidance on proper tank insertion.

Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, wait for a minute, and then turn it back on. This simple step can sometimes resolve communication issues between the printer and the ink tanks.

Clean Contacts: Check the contacts on both the ink tank and the printer. They should be clean and free of any ink or debris. Gently wipe the contacts with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab if needed.

Firmware Update: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to address bugs and improve functionality.

Use Genuine Ink: Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Some printers may not recognize or work well with third-party or refilled cartridges.

Reset Printer: Check if your printer has a reset option. This can sometimes resolve issues related to ink recognition.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
