Routinely use non Ho ink. Screen says damaged cartridge needs replacement. Tried two different magenta cartridges then brand new HP  all with no effect. I can not print black only which would be fine.

do I scrap printer or is there a fix?

Hi @Aircom,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it must be to deal with this, especially when you've already tried multiple cartridges, including a brand-new HP one, with no success. Let's go through the best possible solutions before considering replacing the printer.

Please Note: If you are using a mix of HP and third-party cartridges, your printer may refuse to work due to HP’s built-in cartridge authentication system. HP printers are designed to recognize genuine HP cartridges, and some models require all cartridges to be HP-branded for the printer to function properly.

  • If you have a third-party cartridge installed alongside HP cartridges, the printer may detect an incompatibility and block printing altogether.
  • Remove the third-party cartridges and install only HP-branded ones.
  • If the printer starts working, it confirms that mixing HP and non-HP ink is causing the problem.

1. Power Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes to clear any residual power.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and remove all ink cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the gold contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.
  • Let it dry completely, then reinstall the cartridges.

3. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Go to HP’s support website and download the latest firmware update for your printer.
  • Install it and restart the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
