Just purchased and set up brand new HP Laser Jet Pro MFP 3101fdw. I cannot get the toner cartridge in and the top to close.  I  feel stupid, but I've tried for over an hour.

Hi @CharnieK,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

No worries at all — you’re definitely not alone in facing this issue, and I’m happy to help! Sometimes, when setting up a new printer, the toner cartridge installation can be a little tricky, especially with new models.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get that toner cartridge installed and the top of your HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw to close:

Step-by-Step Guide to Install the Toner Cartridge:

Turn Off the Printer (Optional but can make the process easier).

  • It’s usually a good idea to turn off the printer before installing or adjusting components, just to avoid triggering any sensors or moving parts while you work.

Open the Printer’s Front Door:

  • You’ll need to open the front door of the printer where the toner cartridge is installed.
  • The front door should open easily. If there’s any resistance, double-check that you’re not missing a latch or button that needs to be pressed before opening.

Remove the New Toner Cartridge from the Packaging:

  • The toner cartridge will be sealed in plastic packaging. Remove it carefully.
  • Be sure to shake the toner cartridge gently from side to side to evenly distribute the toner inside.

Remove Any Protective Tape:

  • New toner cartridges often have a protective tape or plastic cover on the contacts and some parts of the cartridge that need to be removed before installation.
  • Remove all tape or plastic clips on the cartridge. There might be a little tab or plastic strip on the sides of the cartridge that you need to pull off.

Insert the Toner Cartridge:

  • Align the toner cartridge with the track inside the printer.
  • The cartridge should fit into the slot with the toner facing down (the front of the printer). There’s usually a guide or ridge to help you line it up correctly.
  • Slide the cartridge in slowly, ensuring it’s aligned with the slot and not forcing it in.
  • When the cartridge is fully inserted, you should feel it click into place. You should hear a slight "snap" or feel some resistance when it's properly seated.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your response. It does help.  It turns out the little cartridge  gate/door is floppy and had flopped down, blocking both entry of the cartridge and even closing the lid.  Holding up the door manually with one hand so that the green middle tab was visible while inserting the cartridge did the trick.
