Microsoft Windows 11

I have had the Smart Tank Inkjet 7001 for a little over a year....which also means my warranty has expired. A few weeks ago, the tricolor printhead started blinking on the control panel. I followed all the HP suggestions for restarting the printer, then cleaning the printhead, and now I tried replacing the printhead. Alas, it is still registering that it is missing the printhead. I am at a loss for what to do next.

@Jennifer612, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it must be to deal with a persistent printhead error on your HP Smart Tank 7001, especially after trying all the recommended steps. Let's walk through a few more detailed troubleshooting steps to help resolve the "Printhead Missing" issue:

Check Printhead Installation

Even if you've replaced the printhead, it's important to ensure:

  • The printhead is seated correctly in its slot.
  • The blue latch on the printhead carriage is fully closed.
  • The protective plugs and tape on the new printhead have been completely removed.

Clean the Electrical Contacts

Sometimes, ink or debris on the printhead contacts can cause communication issues.

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the printhead.
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the printhead and inside the carriage using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let everything dry for 5–10 minutes before reinserting.

Check Ink Levels and Paper

Ensure:

  • All ink tanks are at least half full.
  • There is paper loaded in the input tray.

These are required for the printer to complete the priming process.

Reset the Printer

A full reset can sometimes clear internal errors:

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on.

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause hardware recognition issues.

If the issue persists even after replacing the printhead and following all steps, then, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
