HP OfficeJet Pro 8710

just put in a genuine cartridge 954 black. Only difference from the last cartridge is that this one is XL so not sure if that is what the problem is but it shouldn’t be as the printer says either can be used. 
Error message is There is a problem with the supply system. Try replacing the affected cartridge with a different, non empty, cartridge. If message reappears again, record message and contact HP. 
Can someone please help me to rectify this. These cartridges are very expensive and I really need this printer to work.
