Hi @MamaDawn,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're having trouble printing in black and white with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Make sure that you have sufficient black ink in your printer. Low ink levels can affect the printing quality.
  • You can check ink levels through the printer software on your computer or directly on the printer's control panel.

Printer Settings:

  • Verify that your printer settings are configured to print in black and white.
  • On your computer, go to the printer settings and ensure that the default print mode is set to black and white.

Driver Update:

  • Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Outdated drivers can lead to printing issues.
  • Visit the HP official website and download the latest drivers for your printer model.

Print Preview:

  • Before printing, check the print preview to ensure that the document is set to print in black and white.
  • Adjust any settings in the print preview that may be causing the issue.

Paper Type and Quality:

  • Ensure that you are using the correct type of paper for your printer.
  • Check the paper quality settings in the printer properties on your computer to make sure they are suitable for black and white printing.

Clean Printheads:

  • If the black ink is still not coming out correctly, the printheads may be clogged. Most printers have a cleaning utility in the software or on the printer itself.
  • Run a printhead cleaning cycle to clear any clogs that may be affecting the black ink.

Reset Printer:

  • Try resetting your printer to its default settings. This can sometimes resolve software-related issues.
  • Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
