HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I’m at my wits end!! I have thick lines of missing color across the whole pages only on photos or images. Black text is perfect. When I print the print quality page, it shows that I need to align the print head. So, I do that and it says it’s aligned successfully but the print quality is the same when I reprint. I have put new cartridges in. I have cleaned the printhead. It would seem as though blue is the issue but blue prints fine on the print quality page.

Hi @EmilyT09,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing thick lines of missing color in your prints, especially with photos or images, despite having new cartridges and successfully aligning the print head, here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Print a Color Test Page:

  • Print a color test page directly from the printer's menu (if available) to check how it handles colors independently from the computer.

2. Perform a Deep Clean:

  • Since you’ve already cleaned the printhead, try performing a deeper cleaning cycle if your printer offers that option. Check the printer settings or HP Smart app for this feature.

3. Check Print Quality Settings:

  • In the print dialog, ensure you’re using the correct print quality settings. Set it to Best Quality or Photo Quality for image printing.

4. Check Paper Type:

  • Make sure you’re using the right type of paper for photo printing. Using plain paper can affect print quality, especially for images.

5. Manually Clean the Printhead:

  • If automatic cleaning isn’t sufficient, you may need to manually clean the printhead:
    1. Remove the printhead (if possible) and use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab dipped in distilled water to gently clean the nozzles.
    2. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.

6. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. You can usually check for updates through the HP Smart app or on the HP Support website.

7. Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall and then reinstall the printer drivers from the HP Support website. Sometimes, driver issues can affect print quality.

8. Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Make sure the cartridges you are using are genuine HP cartridges. Third-party cartridges can sometimes cause compatibility issues.

9. Try Different Software:

  • Print the same images from a different application (like a different photo viewer or editing software) to see if the issue persists.

10. Inspect the Printer:

  • Check for any debris or obstructions inside the printer that could affect print quality. Make sure the printhead is properly seated.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
