This is my second HP printer to have this problem. The other printer was an MFP M127fw. The printer does not recognize that I have installed a new toner. When the problem happened with the 127 I tried multiple new cartridges and all of the recommended fixes. When none of that worked I purchased the M234. The M234 was fine until the cartridge that it came with was emptied and I installed a new one. The 234 gave an error 11 and it cannot detect if the toner is full or empty. I have tried all of the recommended fixes and have spoken to HP tech support and their solution was to send me a new toner. If anyone else has encountered this problem and has solved it I would greatly appreciate the help.

Hi @Bob10291,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a persistent toner detection issue with your HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw, especially after replacing the toner cartridge. This is frustrating, especially since you've already gone through several troubleshooting steps and even replaced the toner.
Here are a few additional things you could try to resolve this issue.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it for a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can help reset the printer's settings and potentially clear the toner error.
Check the Toner Cartridge Installation:
- Ensure the new toner cartridge is installed properly and securely. Sometimes, if it's not seated correctly, it won't be recognized by the printer.
- Inspect the cartridge for any protective covers or seals that might still be on it.
Clean the Contacts:
- Carefully remove the toner cartridge and look for any contacts (small metal pins or strips) on both the cartridge and inside the printer. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab. Dust or toner buildup on the contacts can cause recognition issues.
Check the Drum:
- If the toner cartridge is fine and clean, check the drum (if it's separate) for any damage. If it's worn out or not seated properly, the printer may fail to recognize the toner.
Firmware Update:
- Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve issues like these. Check if your printer has any available updates by visiting the HP website or checking through the printer's settings.
Test with a Known Working Cartridge:
- If possible, try using a toner cartridge from a different, working printer to see if the problem persists. This can help determine if it's a problem with the printer or the toner itself.
Printer Reset to Factory Settings:
- As a last resort, you can try resetting the printer to its factory settings. Be cautious with this, as it will erase any custom settings you have.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
