I can’t get the toner cartridge to turn. A blinking orange light is next to the portal. I was told by Staples that the laser drum needed to be replaced so I replaced it and I still can’t get the toner cartridge to turn 180° and the blinking orange light continues to blink! Help!

Hi @Crunch3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for your patience. Based on reports, the blinking orange light next to the toner cartridge portal, especially after replacing the laser drum, typically indicates a cartridge recognition or alignment issue, not necessarily a drum failure

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This resets internal sensors.

2. Remove and Reinsert the Toner and Drum

  • Open the printer’s front cover.
  • Carefully remove the toner cartridge and the drum unit.
  • Reinsert the drum unit first, then the toner cartridge.
  • Make sure both are firmly seated and click into place.

3. Check for Locking Tabs or Protective Seals

  • Ensure that:
    • Any orange plastic tabs or seals on the new drum or toner have been removed.
    • The cartridge locking mechanism is not stuck or misaligned.
  • If the toner won’t rotate, it may be misaligned or not fully inserted.

4. Inspect the Cartridge Gears

  • Look at the gear teeth on the side of the toner cartridge.
  • If they’re damaged, misaligned, or stuck, the printer may not be able to rotate the cartridge.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Some HP printers allow a semi-full reset:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Hold down Cancel + Back (or Power + Cancel) while turning it on.
    • Wait for the printer to initialize and see if the light stops blinking.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
