I’ve been trying to replace the black ink cartridge in my HP Envy printer. When I open the door to the cartridges, they remain on the far right side, rather than moving to the center. There’s no error or anything that pops up. I know the cartridges can physically move, because it’s still possible to print. Without the carriage moving, I can’t access the cartridge that needs to be replaced.
Things I’ve tried:
- unplugging the printer for >60 seconds and plugging it back in to a wall socket
- resetting to factory default

Hi @Envy6000e2,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you've already tried some basic troubleshooting steps. Since the cartridges aren't moving to the center when you open the door, it could be a mechanical issue with the printer carriage or a sensor problem.
Here are a few more steps you can try:
- Manually move the carriage: Sometimes the carriage can get stuck. Try gently moving it by hand to see if it's able to move freely along the carriage path. Make sure the printer is turned off before attempting this.
- Check for any obstructions: Inspect the carriage path and make sure there are no obstructions blocking the movement of the carriage. Even small bits of paper or debris can cause issues.
- Clean the encoder strip: The encoder strip is a clear plastic strip that runs the length of the printer carriage path. If it's dirty or has ink smudges on it, it can interfere with the movement of the carriage. Carefully clean the encoder strip with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Inspect for damaged parts: Check the printer carriage, carriage belt, and other mechanical parts for any signs of damage or wear.
- Update firmware: Sometimes updating the printer's firmware can resolve issues with carriage movement. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your printer model and follow the instructions to install them. Update the firmware on an HP printer

I hope this helps.
