My HP OfficeJet Pro has an error message saying "use SETUP cartridges" I just replaced the cartridges and no longer have the setup cartridges. I've turned the printer off and on a few times and ensured the cartridges are installed properly. How can I by pass this step to use the printer?

Hi @printer7709,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Use SETUP Cartridges" error indicates that the printer is expecting the original cartridges that came with it during setup. Unfortunately, this restriction is part of HP's printer initialization process. Here's what you can try to resolve or bypass this issue.
Verify Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure that the replacement cartridges are compatible with your specific printer model. Incompatible cartridges may trigger this error.
Perform a Printer Reset
- Unplug the printer: Disconnect it from the power source while it is turned on.
- Wait for 1-2 minutes: Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect and restart: Plug the printer back in and turn it on to see if the error resolves.
Update Printer Firmware
- If your printer allows partial access, check for firmware updates that might resolve the issue.
- Access settings on the printer control panel.
- Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Firmware (menu options may vary).
Factory Reset the Printer
- A full factory reset may bypass the SETUP cartridges requirement:
- Access the Support Menu: Depending on your printer, press and hold the Cancel and OK buttons simultaneously or another button combination (refer to your manual for the exact key sequence).
- Select Restore Factory Defaults.
- Reinitialize the printer setup.
Why Can't This Be Bypassed Easily?
The setup cartridges contain a unique code required for the printer's first-time initialization. Without them, the printer assumes the setup process is incomplete and won't proceed. This is a design feature by HP to ensure the printer's internal settings are properly calibrated during setup.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
