I'm having the same problem as so many others that have posted. There is a vertical black line down left side of paper when printing more than one page. I have tried all the troubleshooting. It is not a dirty print head, etc. Is there actually a solution to this, because I haven't seen where anyone has figured it out.

Thank you.

Hi @ngallucci01

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a vertical black line down the left side of the paper when printing multiple pages, which can definitely be frustrating. Since you've already ruled out a dirty print head, here are a few more steps and potential causes for this issue that might help resolve it:

1. Check the Toner or Ink Cartridge

If you're using a laser printer, the issue might be with the toner cartridge or the drum inside. If it's an inkjet printer, the print head or ink cartridges could still be a possible culprit.

For Laser Printers:

  • Check the toner cartridge: If your printer is a laser printer, sometimes a toner cartridge can develop a defect, such as a leak or buildup of toner, which can cause vertical lines. If you have a spare toner cartridge, try replacing it to see if the problem is resolved.
  • Inspect the drum: Some printers have a separate drum that holds the toner and transfers it to the paper. If the drum is damaged or dirty, it can leave a mark on the page. Look for any scratches or build-up on the drum, and clean it carefully if needed (consult your printer's manual for how to clean the drum, as it’s usually delicate).

For Inkjet Printers:

  • Even though you’ve mentioned it’s not a dirty print head, it could be worth cleaning the print head again. Sometimes, ink can dry in ways that are not visible but still cause issues.
    • Run the print head cleaning cycle from the printer settings.
    • If you still see the line, inspect the ink cartridge for any leaks or defects and try replacing it with a new one.

2. Check for Foreign Objects in the Printer

Sometimes, small pieces of paper, dust, or debris can get lodged inside the printer, especially in the paper path. These could interfere with the print quality and cause lines to appear.

  • Open up the printer and inspect the paper path carefully. Look around the rollers, the print head area, and any visible parts where paper passes through.
  • Use a compressed air can to blow out any dust or small debris, but avoid touching any sensitive parts with your hands.

3. Check the Paper Type

The type of paper you're using can also contribute to print quality issues:

  • Make sure you’re using the correct type and quality of paper recommended for your printer. Certain heavier or coated papers can sometimes cause issues with ink or toner distribution.
  • Try using standard printer paper to see if the problem persists.

4. Perform a Printer Calibration

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I did try all those things. It prints flawlessly on the first sheet and always has a black line on all following sheets. It never happens on the first sheet. There are no other defects in printing otherwise.

Hi @ngallucci01

Thank you for the response. Please follow the below steps, let's go through a couple of other common possibilities:

Toner Cartridge or Drum: If the toner cartridge is damaged or the drum is worn out, it can cause a line to appear. Even though the print head might be fine, the toner or drum might be producing a streak or line on the paper when the pages are printing. Try removing and re-installing the toner cartridge to ensure it's seated correctly. If you have access to a replacement drum or toner, you could swap it out to see if that resolves the issue.

Fuser Issues: Sometimes, a defective fuser can cause a black line to appear on prints. If you're using a laser printer, the fuser helps bond the toner to the paper, and any malfunction in this component can leave marks on the printouts.

Paper Feed Problems: If the paper isn't feeding properly, or there's debris in the paper path, that can cause irregular marks. Try running a few blank pages through the printer to see if the line still appears. If it does, then it's likely an internal issue like the toner cartridge or drum. If it doesn't, something in the paper feed or rollers could be causing the issue.

Software Settings: Sometimes, certain print settings (like the scaling or alignment) can cause issues when printing multiple pages. Double-check that the print settings are correct and that there’s no setting causing the printer to misalign pages.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
