When I bought a new HP printer (which I'm very happy with, by the way), I signed up for the HP Instant Ink subscription that they recommended. After about 15 months I added up the charges from the monthly subscription fees and I had paid probably $100 more than I would have paid if I had just ordered a new cartridge from Amazon or Staples.
The monthly Instant Ink subscription may not seem like much money at first, but over time, I saw that I was paying way more than if I just bought the cartridges myself.
When I finally got tired of over-paying for ink cartridges, I cancelled my subscription. To add insult to injury, HP prevented me from using my printer until I removed the Instant Ink cartridges! So after paying an excessive amount of money for the 1 cartridge that I finally received, I wasn't even allowed to use it!
Perhaps for people who use their printer a lot more than I do and who need a new ink cartridge every month or so, this might be a good value. For me it was a terrible waste of money and I feel like I've been ripped off.
