Why does my laser jet model M283 print faint copies. All color cartridges are 3/4 full. The black cartridge is 1/4 full. Could the cartridge rollers need cleaning?

@PZ2150, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Faint Print Issues on HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283 Printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283 is printing faint copies, there are several factors to consider that could be contributing to this issue. Given the toner levels you've mentioned, the problem could be related to the toner cartridges, print settings, or the need for maintenance. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve faint print issues:
Check Print Settings
- Print Quality Settings: Ensure that your print quality is set to 'Best' or 'Professional' mode. This setting can be found in the print dialog window under 'Paper/Quality'.
- Paper Type: Make sure the paper type in the settings matches the actual paper in the printer. This can affect how the toner is applied to the paper.
Inspect and Replace Toner Cartridges
- Toner Levels: While your color cartridges are mostly full, the black cartridge is 1/4 full and may be causing the faint print. Consider replacing the black cartridge if print quality doesn't improve after other checks.
- Check Cartridge Authenticity: It's essential to use genuine HP cartridges for the best results. Non-HP or refilled cartridges might not provide the expected print quality.
Check and Clean the Cartridge Rollers
Cleaning the rollers can sometimes improve print quality:
- Open the Toner Cartridge Door: Gently remove the toner cartridges.
- Inspect the Rollers: Check for toner build-up or debris on the rollers.
- Clean the Rollers: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a swab slightly moistened with water to clean the rollers. Avoid using abrasives or harsh chemicals that could damage the rollers.
Run a Print Quality Diagnostic
- Print a Diagnostic Page: This can be accessed through the printer's control panel under 'Setup' > 'Reports' > 'Print Quality Report'.
- Analyze the Diagnostic Page: Look for areas that appear faint or uneven. This can help determine if there's a specific issue with a toner cartridge or another component.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

@PZ2150, thanks so much for the update — I know how frustrating it is when even a new cartridge doesn’t solve the problem. Let’s dig a little deeper together.
Here are a few more things to try:
1. Check Transfer Belt & Imaging Drum:
If your prints are still faint after replacing the toner, the transfer belt or imaging drum could be worn or dirty. Faint areas across all pages can point to this.
2. Run “Cleaning Page” & Calibration:
From the control panel:
Setup > Service > Cleaning Page
After that, go to:
Setup > Printer Maintenance > Calibrate Color
3. Firmware Update:
Make sure your printer firmware is up to date via HP's software page — outdated firmware can affect print quality too.
4. Try a Factory Reset (last resort):
If nothing else works, a reset might help clear internal glitches. Let me know if you’d like steps for that.
Hope this helps!

Zoey:
Thanks for the reply. I've already cleaned and calibrated the printer. I'm not sure where the drum and transfer are on my MFP M283cdw printed. Please let me know where they are. I can only see rollers on each of the cartridges, which I've wiped down already. I'd like to mention that this printer is a replacement. The original one that was under warranty at the time had a similar problem. After numerous attempts by tech support to resolve the problem and after swapping out all of the cartridges, the print quality was still faint; so, HP sent me a replacement. I would like to send you PDF attachments of the original print quality and faint print quality that I sent to HP Support during their diagnostic attempts. Although my faint copies are not as faint as in
the photo, the quality is only a little better.

Hi @PZ2150,
Thanks so much for the detailed update. I can completely understand how frustrating it must be to go through this — especially since this is already a replacement unit and you've tried so many of the right steps.
You're absolutely on point to look into the imaging drum and transfer belt. On the MFP M283cdw, these parts are built into the toner cartridges themselves — meaning there's no separate drum or transfer unit to remove or inspect. However, toner distribution and print consistency still rely heavily on those internal components functioning correctly.
Since you've already cleaned and calibrated the printer, and replaced the black cartridge, the next step could be trying a firmware update if not done yet — it can sometimes resolve deep-seated print quality bugs.
Hope this helps!

Joey:
I installed the new firmware; no improvement. After inspecting the print quality again, I think the yellow color is the faintest. I recently changed the yellow cartridge. At $110 each, I'm not about to purchase another one in order to test if that is the problem. I can purchase a small inkjet for $110. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Thanks
