used supposed compatible ink cartridges they would not work and then tried hp cartridges and constant cartridge error. I've updated firmwhere, replaced printer head, installed new HP cartridges, performed power down reset. Nothing works. any ideas?

@Balloubear63, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Cartridge Error on HP OfficeJet Pro 8600!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It seems like you've tried several steps to resolve the cartridge error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, but the issue persists. Here are some additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Check for Protective Tape and Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
- Remove the cartridges from the carriage.
- Check for any protective tape on the copper-colored contacts and remove it.
- Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and wipe the contacts on the cartridge.
- Lightly dampen another lint-free cloth or swab and clean the electrical contacts in the carriage.
2. Reset the Printer
- Unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet first, then into the printer.
- If the printer does not power on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
3. Check Cartridge Numbers
- Make sure that the installed cartridges are compatible with your printer model and region.
- Verify that the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges designed for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

You must have not read my meassage. I already tried all your suggestions. I tried using another make of printer cartridge and the 8600 rejected them. Now all I can get is a message saying the two cartridges that I tried to replace may be damaged and to replace or call HP. Call HP, what a joke. All i received was a run around via their online platform suggesting the same lame repair solutions you suggested. I suspect the problem lies deeper in the firmwhere which I have updated or think i did, replaced printer head, cold boot reset, take apart old print head and clean all contacts with eraser and alcohol, replace all cartridges with HP cartridges etc. I'm so disgusted with HP and there propriatary cartride crap and lame ass support, that I am purchasing a brother printer.

@Balloubear63, welcome back — and thanks for hanging in there. I can hear the frustration in your words, and I completely get it. You've clearly done more than your fair share of troubleshooting — from firmware to printhead and cartridge replacements — and still facing the same brick wall? That’s beyond exhausting.
