My 8710 office jet pro.
Recently had to replace the print head.
After replacing the head, I bought all new HP factory sealed ink cartridges.
Now printer is telling me ONE of the brand new cartridges (yellow) is not compatible.
The rest are fine. Please advise

Hi @Weisseguy,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Ugh, I can only imagine how frustrating this must be, you just got a brand-new print head, loaded up fresh HP ink, and now your printer decides to throw a tantrum over one single cartridge? Not cool. But don’t worry, we’re not going to let one stubborn yellow cartridge hold your 8710 hostage! Let’s troubleshoot and get things flowing smoothly again.
Basic Troubleshooting
Turn off the Printer
- Unplug it for 2 minutes and restart.
Remove and Reinsert the Cartridges
- Take out all ink cartridges and reinsert them one by one.
- Ensure the yellow cartridge clicks into place.
Check for Protective Strips & Chip Issues
- Make sure the protective tape is removed from the yellow cartridge.
- Clean the chip on the cartridge (gold contacts) using a dry lint-free cloth.
Reset the Printer
- Go to:
- Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults
- Select Restore Factory Defaults, then restart the printer.
Update Printer Firmware
- On the printer screen:
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
- If the printer is stuck, update firmware using HP Smart App on your PC.
Try a Different Cartridge
- If possible, try another genuine HP yellow cartridge.
- If a different cartridge works, the previous one might be faulty.
Disable HP Cartridge Protection (If Enabled)
- Open the HP Smart App or HP Printer Software on your PC.
- Navigate to Printer Settings > HP Cartridge Protection.
- Turn it off and restart the printer.
Printers can be a little dramatic sometimes, but we’ll get this sorted. Give these steps a try, and let me know how it goes. If that yellow cartridge is still being the odd one out, we’ll keep at it until your printer is back to running like a champ!
