color ink cartridges not printing correctly for OfficeJet 6978

I will state of front that I have an older printer which has served me well up until I bought my carts directly from HP a few months ago. I have always used HP carts before, just bough from another distributor. I see I'm not the only one with the same problem of color carts not printing properly, but "customer support" is not very supportive.

I actually ran through the entire 3 carts trying to correct the problem by running the diagnostic, then updated the software and still no change. I'm now on my second set and don't want to burn them out like the last set.

I would love an HP specialist to just let me know: do I need to buy a new printer OR should I just wait until a new set of carts are made and sent from the Far East?
