If your "compatible" cartridges are incompatible, I suggest you contact your supplier for replacements.
HP cartridges have a warranty.

I actually just read that they deactivate the cartridges they send you once the subscription is no longer active. So although they are full, I can’t use them unless I reactivate my subscription. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it!

It sounds like you had an HP Instant Ink subscription. Yes, Instant Ink cartridges are only usable if you have an active Instant Ink subscription. You will need to either replace the cartridges with retail cartridges or reactivate your subscription.
