Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP Deskjet printer 4630. One day I got a message "this cartridge is not compatible with this printer".

I was using HP 61 ink cartridge.

Do I need to update the driver?

thanks for your help!

Hi @Azure7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "cartridge not compatible" error message you're seeing is more likely related to a compatibility issue between the printer and the ink cartridge rather than a driver problem. In most cases, HP printers do not require driver updates for basic functions like recognizing ink cartridges.

Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that you are using genuine HP 61 ink cartridges that are compatible with your HP Deskjet 4630 printer. Sometimes, using third-party or refilled cartridges can lead to compatibility issues.
  • Inspect Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and remove the incompatible cartridge. Check the cartridge contacts (the gold-colored area on the cartridge) and the corresponding contacts inside the printer. Make sure they are clean and free from any dirt or debris.
  • Reinstall Cartridge: After cleaning the contacts, reinstall the cartridge securely into the correct slot. Make sure it clicks into place.
  • Power Cycle: Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in. Turn the printer back on and check if the issue persists.
  • Firmware Update: While driver updates are generally not the cause of cartridge compatibility issues, it's a good idea to check for any firmware updates for your printer. You can visit the official HP support website and enter your printer model to find and download any available firmware updates.

Remember to use genuine HP ink cartridges to ensure optimal performance and avoid compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

thanks for your help. I tried all your suggestions but it still says incompatible cartridge. It is an HP cartridge with the right number for my printer. I'll check about firmware update at the main site.

take care, Azure

Thanks very much for all your help.

In the end, I decided to buy a new printer because none of those remedies worked.

best wishes,

Azure7
