Hi @TinaWest,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer shows an error message with a new ink cartridge, here are some common troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure the new cartridge is compatible with your printer model.
  • Double-check the part number on the cartridge packaging to confirm it matches the required cartridge type for your printer.

Remove and Reinsert the Cartridge

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  • Open the printer's access door and carefully remove the ink cartridge.
  • Check for any protective tape or cover on the cartridge. If present, remove it.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly into the slot.
  • Close the printer access door and reconnect the power cord.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the ink cartridge and gently clean the electrical contacts (gold or copper areas) on the cartridge and in the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let it dry completely before reinserting.

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source for 1–2 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for available firmware updates for your printer.
  • Use the HP Smart app or visit the HP Support website to download and install updates.

Try Another Cartridge

  • If you have a spare cartridge, install it to determine whether the issue is with the cartridge itself or the printer.

Perform a Printer Self-Test

  • Access the printer menu and run a self-test or diagnostic page. This can help determine if the printer is recognizing the cartridges correctly.

Check for Debris

  • Inspect the cartridge slot for any dust or debris that might interfere with the connection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
