Going insane. And hard lesson well-learned. I purchased a backup 910XL Black Cartridge last late November. Installed it a couple days ago. Although the supply level shows as FULL, nothing. The other three color cartridges were very low and I think I'm correct in the assumption that, unlike the old days, HP printers will only properly print with all cartridges installed and full enough to function. So, I replaced those with 910 cartridges (all of which also show up as FULL) ... still nothing on the 910XL. No temperature or storage issues. Cleaned both cartridge and the "cradle" that holds it. Of course the boilerplate suggestion is try a new cartridge. But who can afford to throw another $45.00 at such an issue? IF it were not showing as FULL, I'm assume cartridge failure. But IF it reads as FULL, what can I do now? [Please pardon quick whining: "How can we be this deep into the 21st century and still be bedeviled by 1990's-style printer/cartridge issues? So frustrated and clueless ... a bad combination, no?") Thanks for any assistance you can give an old cranky guy.

Hi @Bob_Bennett,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your frustration, dealing with printer issues can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it seems like everything should be working fine. Let's see if we can troubleshoot this together.

Since you've already cleaned both the cartridge and the cradle, there are a few more steps we can try:

  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve issues. Turn off your printer, wait a few moments, and then turn it back on.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to address bugs and improve performance.  Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Clean the Print Head: If ink has dried on the print head, it can block the flow of ink. Most printers have a utility for cleaning the print head. You can usually find this option in the printer's settings menu.
  • Align the Print Head: Printers often have an alignment function to ensure that the print head is properly aligned. This can also help resolve printing issues.
  • Check for Software Updates: Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. Sometimes, issues can arise due to outdated or incompatible drivers.
  • Try a Different Cartridge: I know you mentioned not wanting to spend more money, but if you have access to another 910XL cartridge (perhaps a friend or family member has one you can borrow), it's worth trying to see if the issue persists with a different cartridge. This can help determine if the problem is with the cartridge itself or something else.

I have tried all of the suggested fixes, including installing a new $45 cartridge; all with no results.  Should I conclude that my HP 6958 has given up the ghost and I'll just eat over $175 of new unused HP cartridges?
