Hi @littleoldme ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One printer has stopped accepting generic ink cartridges after previously working with them, there could be several reasons for this issue.

Here's a troubleshooting guide to help you resolve the problem:

  • Check Ink Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the generic ink cartridges you're using are compatible with your printer model. Sometimes, printers may reject cartridges if they're not recognized as compatible.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: Ink cartridge contacts can accumulate dust or ink residue over time, leading to poor connections with the printer. Turn off the printer and carefully remove the cartridges. Clean the contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. Allow them to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
  • Reset Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can resolve communication issues. Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord, and wait for about 1-2 minutes. Then, reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer. Try inserting the generic ink cartridges again.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to improve compatibility and functionality. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download/install any available firmware updates. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Perform a Printer Reset: A more thorough reset can sometimes resolve persistent issues. Consult your printer's user manual or visit the HP support website for instructions on how to perform a factory reset or a semi-full reset.

I hope this helps.
