incompatible ink

I bought non-HP ink and it appears as though my printer will not function unless I buy HP ink.  Please tell me this is not the case.  It has already been ruled that this is illegal

Using non-HP ink cartridges in an HP printer should not be illegal, as consumers generally have the right to choose third-party consumables for their devices. However, some printers may display warnings or error messages when non-original ink cartridges are detected. 

While it may be frustrating, using non-HP ink cartridges should not necessarily render your printer completely non-functional. You may be able to bypass or dismiss the warnings and continue using the non-original cartridges. Keep in mind that using third-party ink may void your printer's warranty, but it should not be illegal.
