I understand your HP Envy Inspire 8138e printer is not accepting the cartridges that were sent, and you’re expecting Instant Ink replacements for your 6-month trial. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Verify cartridge compatibility
The HP Envy Inspire 8138e uses HP 923 or HP 923e setup cartridges.
If you received HP 902 or any other series, they will not be recognized by the printer.
Confirm setup cartridges were installed first
The printer must be initialized using the original setup cartridges that came in the box before any Instant Ink replacements can be used.
If the setup cartridges were skipped, reinstall them and complete the setup process.
Check for cartridge region or account mismatch
Ensure the cartridges are linked to the same HP Instant Ink account used for the 8138e printer.
Cartridges from another printer or region will not function, even if they fit physically.
Restart and reseat the cartridges
Power off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
Remove both cartridges, gently clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reseat them firmly.
Plug the printer back in and power it on.
Check HP Smart app for ink status
Open the HP Smart app, select your HP Envy Inspire 8138e, and check the Ink Status section.
If it shows “Cartridges not compatible” or “Not HP Instant Ink,” it confirms the wrong set was sent.
Wait for Instant Ink replacements to arrive
Once your new printer setup is registered under Instant Ink, HP automatically sends the correct HP 923e trial cartridges.
These are tied to your printer’s serial number and will arrive shortly after activation.
