Hi @nedazia,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

For the HP Envy 5540 printer, if you are experiencing issues with ink cartridge installation, here are several steps you can follow to resolve the problem.

Turn Off and Unplug the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet for 30 seconds to reset the internal mechanisms.

Check the Ink Cartridges:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are correctly installed. Open the printer's cartridge access door and verify that the cartridges are securely seated in their respective slots.
  • Make sure you're using genuine HP ink cartridges compatible with the HP Envy 5540.

Remove and Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Carefully remove the cartridges from their slots, and then reinsert them firmly to ensure a proper connection. Check for any protective plastic tape or packaging that may still be on the cartridges.

Inspect the Cartridges for Damage:

  • Check the ink cartridges for any visible signs of damage, such as leaks or broken parts. If they appear damaged, replacing them might be necessary.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • If there is ink residue or debris on the copper-colored contacts of the ink cartridges or the printer’s cartridge slot, use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with water to clean them. Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.

Check for Firmware or Software Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Go to the HP website or use the HP Smart app to check for any available updates for the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a full reset of the printer. You can do this by holding down the "Power" button for about 10-15 seconds.

Try a Different Set of Cartridges:

  • If possible, try using another set of ink cartridges to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, the problem might be with a faulty cartridge.

Check for Printer Errors:

  • Look for any error messages on the printer's display or the HP Smart app on your device that might give you more insight into the issue.

Reinstall the Printer Driver:

  • Uninstall and reinstall the printer driver and software on your computer to ensure the installation is not causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
