Hi @Emma_Bid23,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you've replaced the cartridges in your HP ENVY 5640 e-All-in-One printer, but you're still getting a message that you need to replace them, there are several things you can try to resolve this issue.

  • Ensure Proper Installation: Double-check that you've correctly installed the new cartridges. Make sure they are securely snapped into place.
  • Remove the Cartridges: Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source. Remove the cartridges and carefully inspect them for any protective tapes or tabs that need to be removed. Sometimes, new cartridges come with protective coverings that must be removed before use.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the contacts on both the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer. This can help ensure a proper connection.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn the printer off, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear error messages.
  • Update Firmware: Visit the HP support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve issues.
  • Check for Genuine Cartridges: Ensure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Some printers are designed to work best with official HP cartridges, and using third-party or refilled cartridges might cause issues.
  • Printer Software: Make sure your printer's software and drivers are up-to-date. Outdated software can sometimes cause communication problems between the printer and the computer.
  • Factory Reset: As a last resort, you can try a factory reset on your printer. Keep in mind that this will erase any custom settings, so it's best to use this option only if other methods have failed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
