instant ink subscription

Hello I recently canceled my instant ink.  I've tried to print and the printer is telling me to contact hp instant ink.com with no help online I called. They told me i have to replace ink cartridge's to be able to print.  Sounds crazy to me but I was wondering if this was true.  They have plenty of ink in them. Thank you
