I have issues with installing new toners to my printer. They are not originals but that should not prevent them from being recognized. Additionally even if I return back old toners - they are getting blocked with the note they are counterfeit.

I figured out some feedback locally that HP might have set the US region for my printer when I registered to HP Smart which is now preventing me from installing EU region toners.

Is there a way to fix this?

Hi @ubocko,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out, and we understand how frustrating it must be to have your printer suddenly reject both new and previously working toner cartridges.

HP toner cartridges are region-locked, meaning a printer set to one region (e.g., the U.S.) may reject cartridges made for another region (e.g., Europe). If your printer was locked to a different region, especially during HP Smart setup, it can cause exactly the symptoms you're seeing.

To assist you further, we need to confirm whether the printer's region has been changed at any point.

Keep me posted

Take care and have a good day.

hi Vikram, thank you for coming back.

I believe this is exactly my printer's issue. It's probably locked for US region while toner's are from Europe.

I don't remember setting the region for my printer hence I assume it's been done automatically when I registered with HP Smart?

Would you let me know how to check the region locked and how to change it?

I'm based in Europe, bought the printer here and I have no idea why it got locked for US.

thanks

Hi @ubocko,

Thank you for letting me know,

Ok To perform a printer region reset, you need to meet the following conditions:

1. The printer should be connected using a printer USB cable to the computer.

2. You need to have the printer's full feature software installed on your computer.

3. You need to have all the cartridges either from the region/country from where the printer was purchased originally, or the new region/country to which you want to reset it.

4. Make sure the HP Smart App is installed too.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

hi Vikram,

my apologies for such delayed response.

I've tried to follow your advise but seems I'm not succeeding.

The steps from your guide I'm failing at are:

2. What is the full feature software for my printer? I have tried to search but can't find the best fit. As per some other articles/videos I've downloaded and installed "HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M280nw Printer Full Software Solution" from https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-multifunction-printer-series/mo...

3. Is there a way to check which region the cartridge is meant for? I can not find such information on the packaging nor the cartridge itself. From HP Device Toolbox I can see my printer is setup for "Location: Slovak Republic". I can not find any other reference to any regional setup. Even here I can see the location but can't find the option to change it to any other country/region.

As per points No. 1 and 4 - those are met on my side.

I appreciate your advice.

hi Vikram,

thank you for coming back again.

I did some more research and figured out the solution.

The whole problem is that HP started to block every cartridge which is not original. With the update of firmware the block applied across.

As a solution I've been able to revert back to older version of firmware and I'm fully able to print now.

Still I'd like to thank you for trying to help and all your advices.
