I put in a new black ink cartridge in the HP DeskJet 2820e printer, on the display it shows only 1/3 of black colour, although it should be full, it prints only colour and no black letters

Hi @britta7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2820e is having issues with the black ink cartridge despite it being new. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem.

Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the new black ink cartridge is properly installed. Remove and reinsert it to make sure it's seated correctly.

Clean the Printhead:

  • Go to the printer settings and select the option to clean the printhead. This will help clear any clogs in the printhead, which might be causing the black ink not to print.
  • If your printer doesn’t have this option, you can manually clean the printhead by carefully using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Be gentle to avoid damaging the printhead.

Perform a Cartridge Alignment:

  • Sometimes, the printer needs to align the cartridges to ensure proper ink flow. Check your printer’s settings for an alignment option and run it.

Check Ink Levels: Even though the display shows the black ink cartridge as being full, sometimes there is an issue with how the printer detects the ink levels. Try printing a test page to see if it recognizes the ink, or use the HP Smart app to check the ink levels.

Try a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset any issues with the ink system.

Test with Another Black Cartridge: If you still have issues, there could be a problem with the new cartridge itself. If possible, try another new black ink cartridge to see if that resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
