In general, matte labels are less likely to result in issues than might glossy labels.  This does not mean the printer will refuse to print glossy labels - In general, matte labels are just easier to print.

Do make sure the printer is clean, has sufficient ink, and is provided with all the appropriate settings to decrease the chance of issues.

"Stickers" are not labels -- the print surface on stickers, and / or perhaps the backside of the sticker paper sheet, might not be compatible with the printer and / or the available settings in your app or print software.  That said, I won't defend the statement -- it's just a personal opinion.

Many label papers are compatible -- for example, Avery sells a variety of label papers and provides free templates to go with the label papers.

Printing PDF files are sometimes easier than printing directly from an original Word document.

Depending on your label sheet, "Plain Paper" might be suitable as a paper type selection during job setup.

If the paper is a bit thicker, look for paper type "Thick", "Brochure (matte or glossy), or Index / Card paper, or whatever seems closer.

General Reminder:

Do not select Paper Type Photo Paper when you are not actually using Photo Paper -- most printers cannot be fooled.
