Hi @sandraw776,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is not recognizing a new black cartridge, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Ensure Compatibility: Make sure the new black cartridge is compatible with your HP printer model. Check the cartridge packaging or consult your printer's manual or HP website for compatibility information.
  • Proper Installation: Double-check that you have installed the new black cartridge correctly. Open the printer cover, remove the old cartridge, and insert the new one firmly into the cartridge slot until it clicks into place.
  • Remove Plastic Tape or Seals: Some cartridges come with protective plastic tape or seals that need to be removed before installation. Check the cartridge and remove any tape or seals that may be obstructing the contacts or ink flow.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: If the cartridge contacts are dirty or have ink residue on them, it can interfere with the communication between the cartridge and the printer. Carefully clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Be gentle to avoid damaging the contacts.
  • Restart Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues between the printer and the cartridge. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Update Firmware/Drivers: Ensure your printer's firmware and drivers are up to date. Visit the HP website and download the latest firmware and drivers for your printer model. Follow the instructions provided to update the firmware and drivers.
  • Reset Printer: Try resetting your printer to its default settings. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to determine the cause of the issue and hopefully resolve it so that your HP printer can recognize the new black cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
