Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Officejet 8600 working fine. Called for a new 951XL Magenta ink cartridge. Changed, now message says "problem with printer or ink system. Followed instructions to unplug, wait, restart. Same message.  Do I have a bad "new" ink cartridge??

Purchased HP cartridge at Staples. Have not had trouble in past. Help!

The "problem with printer or ink system" error on your HP OfficeJet 8600 often points to issues with the newly installed ink cartridge. Since you've already tried unplugging and restarting the printer, here are additional steps to troubleshoot.

 

Check the Cartridge

  • Inspect the cartridge: Remove the new Magenta 951XL cartridge and examine it for:
    • Residual tape or packaging that might still be covering the ink nozzles or contacts.
    • Physical damage or leaks.
  • Re-seat the cartridge: Ensure the cartridge is properly seated in the printer.

Clean the Contacts

  • Power off the printer and remove the ink cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Allow everything to dry before reinserting the cartridge and turning the printer back on.

Test with a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, replace the new Magenta 951XL cartridge with another one (new or from another printer) to rule out a defective cartridge.

Update Firmware

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the printer's control panel or by downloading them from HP's website.

Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer from the power source while it is turned on.
  • Wait for 1-2 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.

Check for Printer Errors

  • If the issue persists, print a diagnostic report (if possible) from the printer’s settings to identify any specific issues with the ink system.
