Hi @Muckmeister,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your "new" cartridge was recognized as empty right out of the package, there are a few steps you can take to resolve this issue:
1. Verify the Cartridge Installation:
- Make sure that the cartridge is correctly installed in the printer. Remove it and reinsert it securely.
- Ensure that any protective tapes or seals have been removed from the cartridge before installation.
2. Check for Printer Errors:
- Look at your printer's display or software to see if it provides any specific error messages related to the cartridge.
3. Run a Printer Cartridge Diagnostics:
- Many HP printers offer a diagnostic tool within the software to check the status of installed cartridges. You can run this to verify the status of the cartridge.
4. Reset the Printer:
- Try resetting your printer by turning it off, unplugging it from the power source, waiting for about 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
