@frank451, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue where your HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3835 All-in-One Printer is not recognizing a new black ink cartridge, showing the error: "The indicated cartridge is not intended for this printer."

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Check Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure the black cartridge is compatible with your printer model and region. The HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3835 typically uses HP 652 cartridges for Europe and Middle east region.

  • Check the cartridge number on the label.
  • If you recently moved countries, the cartridge might be region-locked.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes, poor contact between the cartridge and printer can trigger this error.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black cartridge.
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry for a few minutes, then reinstall the cartridge.

Reset the Printer

A simple reset can sometimes clear cartridge recognition errors.

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

Try a Different Cartridge

If possible, try another black cartridge (preferably a genuine HP one) to determine if the issue is with the cartridge or the printer.
