Hi @DonStites,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer is experiencing issues even after switching from non-HP to a genuine HP cartridge. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot this issue.

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the cartridge error is cleared.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printer and remove the yellow cartridge.
  • Inspect the copper-colored contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • If there is any dust or ink buildup, gently clean them using a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry and reinsert the cartridge.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Non-HP cartridges sometimes trigger errors if the printer’s firmware is updated to block third-party cartridges.
  • Check for firmware updates on the printer via the control panel or through the HP Smart app and install updates if necessary.

Run a Diagnostic Report

  • Use the printer’s control panel to run a diagnostic report.
  • Check if the yellow ink level is detected correctly and whether there are any other error messages related to the ink system.

Reset the Cartridge Chip

  • In some cases, the printer may not recognize the new cartridge because the chip wasn't properly reset.
  • Try removing and reinstalling the cartridge several times to see if the printer eventually recognizes it.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure that the genuine HP yellow cartridge you installed is the correct model for your printer. The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 uses HP 952 (standard) or HP 952XL (high-yield) ink cartridges.

Restore Factory Settings

  • If none of the above steps work, consider restoring the printer to factory defaults and reinstalling the cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
