printer prints a weird icon vertically

Hello to all


My HP Laser Jet 1020 is printing documents with a weird icon that looks like ">" along with what looks like a side profile that looks like the number "1".  It prints these bout three times per page on a regular 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, indented about 20 spaces in.  I am not sure what it is but it is not an ASCII character.  I thought that the toner needed replacing but that did not solve the issue.

I understand you are getting this Critical printer error on the computer screen, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did you make any changes to the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine? 

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

Download and run HP Print and Scan DoctorFollow steps from the link: Click here


Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Laserjet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, click here.
