Our printer started saying that our cartridges were counterfeit and will not let us print anything now. We bought these from a office supply chain that we have used for years. Any ideas?

Is the error associated with all the cartridges or just some of the cartridges?
I would suggest you contact your supplier for warranty replacement for the affected cartridges, if the third-party cartridges do have a warranty. [Genuine HP cartridges do have a warranty.]
